How does self-tanner work?

Self-tanning products are becoming increasingly popular. Why? They're incredibly easy to use and incredibly effective—after just a few hours, you can enjoy a beautiful, natural tan. The fact that the entire process happens at home is also a dream come true—you don't even have to go out in the sun or visit a tanning salon. But have you ever wondered how a self-tanner works? We've prepared a wealth of knowledge and interesting facts for you!

Is self-tanner harmful?

Self-tanner isn't harmful to your skin! It contains a mysterious ingredient called DHA, or dihydroxyacetone. Upon contact with the epidermis, it reacts with the proteins and amino acids contained therein, resulting in discoloration of the outer skin surface. Dihydroxyacetone is mild and shouldn't cause allergic reactions.

The higher the concentration of DHA in a cosmetic, the darker the result. The amount of DHA is also the main difference between self-tanners andbronzing lotions – the latter contain significantly less of it.

More about DHA…

Self-tanning products don't stain the skin immediately. Dihydroxyacetone takes several hours to work, so after applying self-tanner , you should wait about 6-8 hours before washing off excess product in the shower.

The active ingredient, DHA, is a white powder that dissolves in water. So where does the brown color of self-tanners come from? Manufacturers deliberately add a brown dye. This makes application much easier, letting you know which parts of your body you've already covered with the product and which you haven't.

What does self-tanner contain ?

Some self-tanning products also contain ingredients called erythrulose and tyrosine. The former takes about two days to work, but it contributes to the longevity of the tan. The latter stimulates melanin production in the skin and accelerates the tanning process. For this reason, it is often used in accelerators and bronzing intensifiers.

Many self-tanning products, in addition to their bronzing properties, are also characterized by their high moisturizing and nourishing properties. What would a beautiful tan be without properly cared for skin? Shea butter, aloe vera, and coconut oil—these are just some of the ingredients that make self-tanners even more appealing.

Does self-tanner protect against UV radiation?

Unfortunately, no – despite the beautiful bronzed skin effect we often aspire to before vacation, self-tanners don't protect against the sun's rays. Self-tanners don't contain sunscreen. So, always remember to use appropriate sunscreen when sunbathing.

Self-tanner - a product for everyone!

There are many self-tanning products available on the market—creams, mousses, and mist. There's something for everyone. Not only will they give you a natural-looking tan, but they'll also ensure your skin is properly hydrated and nourished.
